The LILACS Framework for Culturally Sustainable Pedagogy helps educators examine how cultural humility, relationships, multisensory learning, reflection, cultural responsiveness, and positive reinforcement shape classroom experience. LILACS is not an add-on to effective instruction. It is a way of making instructional decisions with greater intention, humanity, and responsiveness.

Heather Blackwell, PhD, is a literacy scholar, college professor, professional learning leader, and founder of Purposeful Literacy. Her work connects the Sciences of Reading and Learning with culturally sustainable pedagogy and the practical realities of classrooms and education systems. Through research, teaching, technical assistance, and facilitation, she helps educators make complex ideas understandable and usable.
